 TEAM ANDROSCOGGIN HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS

Recent research shows a limited link between assigned student homework and achievement. The teachers of Team Androscoggin assign a variety of purposeful homework on an ongoing basis:

~ English/Language Arts

  • Students are expected to read at least 30 minutes each night. We ask that they read a “balanced diet” of assorted genres.

  • Other assignments will be combined with unit specific learning goals aligned with both English Language Arts and Social Studies.

~ Social Studies

  • Students have a weekly writing assignment due at the end of the day on Thursday which may be worked on throughout the week.

  • Other assignments will be unit/learning goal specific and periodic.

  • Students can expect no more than 2 homework assignments per week including the weekly writing.

  • Long-term projects, including research projects and presentations, will occur once a quarter, these will necessitate some out of class work for most students.

~ Science

  • Students have an occasional assignment that needs to be completed at home.

  • We often end class with an informal questions or discussion to think about and be ready to talk about the following day.

  • Long-term projects will be broken into chunks and often given class time to work, however there may be times when students will need to finish work outside of the classroom.

~ Math:

  • Students have an ongoing assignment of fixing any mistakes they make on their graded cooldowns for those that are marked with a grade less than 3.

  • Occasionally when the in class lesson activities are not completed during their class block they will be assigned as homework. These are graded on effort and the answers are gone over as a class the day that they are due.

  • Students have additional practice problems for each of the lessons, but they are not required homework. If a student chooses to do the additional practice then they can check their work with Mr. Colesworthy and get feedback.
